Meimi’s mother stops by Meimi’s room with a couple of movie tickets. She says she and Meimi’s father have already seen the movie, so she’s offering them to Meimi. She says the movie is very romantic, and suggests Meimi has someone she’d want to see it with.

芽美(めいみ):
「マ… ママ()って…」
“Mom, you knew...?”
ママ:
「ママを(あま)()ないことね」
Don't underestimate Mom.”

Key Points

  1. (あま)()る = “to underestimate / take lightly”

    • The literal image is to see someone as easy or harmless, so the idiom means to judge them too lightly

    • Here Mom is warning Meimi not to assume she is clueless or easy to fool

  2. ママを = the person being underestimated

    • The particle marks who is being judged lightly: ママを (あま)()ない

  3. 〜ないことね = firm advice with a warning tone

    • 〜ないこと turns the negative phrase into a rule-like statement: “make sure not to…”

    • Adding softens it into a knowing reminder, so it sounds like “Don’t go underestimating Mom, okay?” rather than a harsh order

  4. Family-register nuance: ママ

    • The mother refers to herself as ママ, which is natural in a parent-child conversation
